SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner) certification: the job it verifies, the experience gate and the 2-hour adaptive exam

The SSCP (Systems Security Certified Practitioner) is ISC2’s practitioner-level certification for the people who run security day to day. You earn it with one adaptive exam — 100 to 125 items in 2 hours, 700 out of 1000 scaled to pass — plus a year of experience in at least one of its seven domains.

A junior security analyst repeatedly executes threat hunts without appropriately bounding the search parameters by time, asset criticality, or specific indicators. What is the most significant operational consequence of this specific practice?

Pick A–D or press 1–4, then give this panel ten seconds: the verdict, and why each of the four options is right or wrong.

What the SSCP certifies

It certifies that you can implement, monitor and administer security controls on real systems: rule bases, identities, logs, keys, backups, endpoints. ISC2 has issued it since 2000, it is vendor-neutral, and ANAB accredits it to ISO/IEC 17024 — ISC2’s certification page lists both.

The outline’s verbs describe the job. Sub-objectives ask you to support and/or implement, apply and operate, rarely to design a programme. That is the operational seat: the person who turns a policy into a firewall change, a SIEM rule or a restore test, then proves it worked.

That seat also decides how the exam reads. A stem names a device, a log line or a recovery target and asks which action you take next. The practitioner’s answer is the concrete one, inside your own scope — the angle the SSCP vs CISSP comparison works through side by side.

Do the clock arithmetic once and keep it: 7,200 seconds ÷ 125 items = 57.6 seconds an item; ÷ 100 = 72 seconds. You will not know which length you are sitting until the exam stops, so train on the 57.6-second number and treat 72 as the ceiling.

Two rules follow from the format. With no review, every item is commit-and-move: pick the best remaining option and go, because you cannot come back to it. With 25 unscored pretest items you cannot identify, every item gets the same effort. The exam format guide covers stopping rules, results and how hard the sitting runs.

No way back on an adaptive exam: 72 seconds an item if it stops at 100, 57.6 if it runs to 125.

The per-item budget

Who the SSCP is for

It fits hands-on security work: security administrators, network and systems administrators, SOC analysts and security engineers. If your week includes reviewing a rule base, tuning log collection, running a restore against a recovery point objective or de-provisioning a leaver’s accounts, the outline describes your job.

It fits less well at either end. With no experience and no relevant degree, you can still pass and hold Associate of ISC2 for up to 2 years while you earn the year — or start with CC. If you set security strategy, CISSP is aimed there; this credential counts toward it but is not a step you must take first.

  • Apply change and configuration management (D1)
  • Provision and de-provision identities (D2)
  • Tune logs and escalate SIEM findings (D3)
  • Contain, recover, meet RTO and RPO (D4)
  • Rotate and revoke keys (D5)
  • Segment networks, review firewall rules (D6)
  • Harden endpoints, mobile and cloud workloads (D7)

Who can sit for it: experience, degree waiver and the Associate path

Anyone can book the exam. The requirements decide what you hold after you pass: one year of cumulative experience in at least one of the seven domains makes you certified once you are endorsed; without it you become an Associate of ISC2. The rules below come from ISC2’s experience requirements, checked October 2026.

Four routes to the credential
Your situationWhat countsWhat you hold after passing
Full-time work in the domains1 year cumulative, paid or unpaid (documented internship); a month = 35 h/week for 4 weeksCertified, after endorsement
Part-time work20–34 h/week counts pro rata: 1,040 h = 6 months, 2,080 h = 12 monthsCertified, after endorsement
A qualifying degreea bachelor’s or master’s in a cybersecurity programme, or in computer science, computer engineering, computer systems engineering, MIS or IT, can satisfy the whole yearCertified, after endorsement
Neither yetpass the exam anywayAssociate of ISC2, with 2 years to earn the 1 year

One domain is enough: the year does not have to cover all seven.

After the pass, the clock that matters is 9 months: that is how long you have to submit the endorsement application. An active ISC2-certified member in good standing endorses your experience (a CC-only holder cannot), or ISC2 endorses you with proof of employment. Review typically takes 4–6 weeks, and you also agree to the ISC2 Code of Ethics.

The seven SSCP domains

The 2025 outline splits the exam into seven domains weighted 16/15/15/14/9/16/15. The weights hold at either length, so on a 100-item sitting expect about 16 items from Domain 1 and 9 from Cryptography; on 125, about 20 and 11.

SSCP domain weights, exam outline effective 1 October 2025
  1. D1Security Concepts and Practices16%
  2. D2Access Controls15%
  3. D3Risk Identification, Monitoring and Analysis15%
  4. D4Incident Response and Recovery14%
  5. D5Cryptography9%
  6. D6Network and Communications Security16%
  7. D7Systems and Application Security15%

Bar length is relative to the heaviest domain (16%). Weights total 100%.

Domains 1 and 6 carry 16% each, and both have a full guide: Domain 1, Security Concepts and Practices and Domain 6, Network and Communications Security. Access Controls, Risk Identification, Monitoring and Analysis, Incident Response and Recovery, Cryptography, and Systems and Application Security are summarised on the domains overview; their own guides are coming soon.

Four steps from first practice item to certified

  1. Step 01

    Prepare against the 2025 outline

Let the weights set your minutes: Domain 5 at 9% earns about half the time of Domain 1 or 6. Practise at 58–72 seconds an item on the free SSCP practice questions.

  2. Step 02

Book and pass at a Pearson VUE test centre

US$249 standard registration in the Americas, per ISC2’s pricing page, checked October 2026; reschedule US$50, cancel US$100, same page and date. Every other cost is on the certification cost page. There is no online sitting; you get pass or fail at the centre, with no numeric score.

  3. Step 03

    Get endorsed within 9 months

Submit the application with your experience, or a qualifying degree; without either you stay an Associate of ISC2 until the year is in.

  4. Step 04

    Maintain it every three years

Earn 60 CPE credits per three-year cycle and pay the annual maintenance fee (what a lapse costs is on the same cost page): US$135 a year once certified, US$50 for Associates, per ISC2’s member policies, checked October 2026.

Is the SSCP worth it?

It is worth it when your work is operational and you want that work verified. The exam proves knowledge; the endorsement proves a year of practice — a gate many security exams do not have. ISC2 lists it as approved under DoDM 8140.03 on its certification page: a recognised qualification for US defence cyber roles, not a legal requirement for any job.

It also carries forward. On ISC2’s CISSP experience-waiver list (revision of 1 April 2026, announced on isc2.org) the SSCP counts for 1 of the 5 years CISSP asks. ISC2 presents the two as complementary — operational and strategic — rather than as a sequence; the SSCP vs CISSP page lays out where each one fits. For the CompTIA side, read SSCP vs Security+: ISC2 itself pitches the pair as partners for DoD 8140 rather than rivals.

No salary figures here: they swing by survey, year and region, so any number you read is only as good as its named source and date.

Free SSCP practice and guides

The SSCP practice questions page holds 60 original items weighted like the outline — D1 10, D2 9, D3 9, D4 8, D5 5, D6 10, D7 9 — with a filter tab per domain and the reasoning for all four options. A pace meter tracks your average seconds per item against the 58–72 second budget. It works offline, stores nothing after the page closes and predicts no score.

Start with the item at the top of this page — one from Domain 3 — then run the 60 in blocks of 25. At 57.6 seconds an item a block is 24 minutes; at 72, it is 30. Four more samples sit on the exam format page, and each domain guide closes with 12.

Same question style, every domain, on iPhone — for the minutes between other things.

  • Train on 57.6 s; 72 s is the ceiling
  • Past 2 minutes on one item (twice the budget): pick and go

SSCP questions, answered

What is SSCP certification?

It is ISC2’s practitioner-level, vendor-neutral certification for hands-on security roles. You earn it by passing one adaptive exam across seven domains and getting a year of experience endorsed.

What does SSCP stand for?

Systems Security Certified Practitioner. ISC2 has issued it since 2000.

Is SSCP entry-level?

No. ISC2 calls CC (Certified in Cybersecurity) its entry-level certification and this one practitioner-level. CC needs no experience; the practitioner credential needs a year in its domains, a qualifying degree, or time as an Associate of ISC2.

What are the requirements for SSCP?

One year of cumulative paid or unpaid experience in at least one of the seven domains, or a qualifying bachelor’s or master’s degree in its place; then endorsement within 9 months of passing. Without either, you pass as an Associate of ISC2 with 2 years to earn the year. Details are in who can sit for it.

Is SSCP worth getting?

If your work is operational security, yes: it verifies a year of practice, it is approved under DoDM 8140.03, and it counts for 1 of the 5 years on ISC2’s CISSP experience-waiver list.
